A Global Crisis of Democracy & Youth (Dis)Engagement in Australia is the next event by the branch's Emergent Cohort.

Join us as Dr Intifar Chowdhury and our Emergent Cohort addresses the global crisis of democracy as reflected in declining rates of voter participation, by focusing on young Australians.

By examining the influences of age, period, and cohort effects, Dr Chowdhury explores whether young Australians are really disengaging or if other factors are at play?

Despite the methodological challenges involved, Dr Chowdhury's findings suggest that young Australians are no less committed to democratic values than older generations, and other effects can explain fluctuations in democratic engagement.

The role of compulsory voting in shaping democratic attitudes and behaviours in Australia is central and the contextual factors driving online political participation across all demographics requires more research but the negative stereotyping of young people and the need for political institutions to adapt to contemporary forms of engagement all need to be discussed.
