Kerin Ayyalaraju has been Australian Ambassador to Denmark, Norway and Iceland since August 2021. She is a senior officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade whose extensive career has seen her deployed in many countries, frequently in crisis situations, and across a range of functions at headquarters in Canberra.
Prior to taking up her current position in Copenhagen, Ms Ayyalaraju served as Australia’s first ‘Pop Up’ Ambassador to Estonia – a resource-effective initiative which continues today under the current government. She has previously served as Deputy Ambassador in the United Arab Emirates, as a senior APEC liaison official in Vietnam and as second secretary & consul at the Australian embassy in Lebanon.
In recognition of her strong consular, media and crisis management experience, Ms Ayyalaraju has repeatedly been deployed as a member of DFAT’s crisis management team to assist in a range of international crises, including in Tacloban, the Philippines, following Typhoon Haiyan, and in Ukraine following the downing of Flight MH17. She has also been deployed in Bali, Shanghai, Ankara, New Delhi and as Chargé in Lisbon.
At headquarters in Canberra, Ms Ayyalaraju has worked in media, consular policy and private sector engagement. She is a graduate of the Australian National University.
